- January 26 – A building collapses Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At least four have died and 22 are still missing after three structures, one 20 stories high, collapsed due to structural failures. This comes as Brazil hurries to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, which it intends to use to showcase its growing economic and political competitiveness.
- On Jan. 26, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard was escorted by police and bodyguards out of an awards ceremony after demonstrators, protesting the settlement of Australia 224 years ago. 200 protesters trapped Gillard and opposition leader Tony Abbott before police arrived to clear a passage for the two to escape.
- Jakarta, Indonesia – Travelers push government trains to their capacity limit due to a lack of public transportation and infrastructure. Indonesia regularly struggles with controlling this practice of riding on top of trains, regardless of its efforts to curtail it.
- Mourners walk along the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin. Germany observes Holocaust Memorial Day on the 27th to honor the 6 million Jews and other victims of the Nazis during the Holocaust.
